“In connecting with The Network I’ve gone from someone who’d mumble through tears that ‘I wasn’t always this pathetic,’ to a woman who is learning to recognize that I can be strong, and that I am capable. With the support of The Network I’ve come to realize that this is in fact my life, and am so grateful to feel so much of that stress and fear and anger finally subside.” – Anonymous Survivor
“It’s been one of the most amazing experiences I’ve had through my crisis. The Network/La Red has helped me better myself and given me confidence and hope for my future. They have been supporting me through a difficult and challenging time through the healing process of my abuse.” – Anonymous Survivor
“When I first reached out on The Network/La Red hotline, I was frightened, scared, and very frustrated. I knew I needed something but didn’t know exactly what it was. I felt broken. Now, with the help of my advocate, hotline staff, volunteers, and staff at The Network, I manage crises, instead of them managing me. You see, I just realized that The Network is a survivor-led organization, that the survivors have been where I have been, and that gave me hope to heal, to move forward, to give back when and where I can, and it made my future brighter.” – Anonymous Survivor
Understand the gravity of our impact with our reports
In FY18, The Network/La Red (TNLR) worked with MDPH to assess and improve the degree of accessibility and inclusivity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and/or transgender (LGBTQ+) communities in FVPSA grantee programs across Massachusetts.
First, a conversation was held at an MDPH providers meeting with FVPSA-funded program staff as well as other DV/SV providers. TNLR staff facilitated this conversation in order to understand the challenges providers face and the tools and resources they need in this endeavor. The outcome of this conversation allowed TNLR to plan a training entitled “Creating LGBTQ+ Accessibility in Your Organization.” Two staff from each of the FVPSA grantee programs in MA were requested to attend, and then bring the knowledge back to their organizations. The slides from this training are attached.
After the training, the attached survey was sent to all grantee programs, who were asked to have it completed by all staff, volunteers, interns, and board members. The survey was an assessment tool designed to help determine the degree of accessibility and inclusivity of LGBTQ+ communities at agencies and within the state of Massachusetts. The data collected was used to show how organizations are doing, what is going well, and what areas are in need of improvement. This data was compiled into the attached report, including recommendations for further study and best practices for individual agencies as well as statewide.
This report will serve as a guide towards fidelity to FVPSA requirements of creating inclusive and accessible services. Moreover, this report may allow for critical reflection as we work to shift the cultural landscape towards a more just world.
